People generally wear old clothes that are white in color, as different colors of holi can be seen on white clothes. Holi greetings are also send by people to wish their relative and friends a very Happy Holi. This festival of colors spread love and happiness all around and fill your hearts with joy. The festival of Holi was originally termed as 'Holika', whose history could be traced back to ancient times. The Holi festival history can be related in a prominent manner in the Eastern part of India. With Holi existing a number of centuries before Christ, its meaning has however, changed over the years. Usually it was performed by married women in the quest of happiness and betterment of the family.

In some parts of India, especially in Bengal and Orissa, Holi Purnima is celebrated as the birthday of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. But the actual meaning of the word Holi is ‘burning’. With lots of legends associated with the history of Holi festival, the most prominent of them is the legend with King Hiranyakashyap. The legends follows like this – Hiranyakashyap, being an autocratic kind wanted all his subjects should worship only him but his own son; Prahlad dejected his wish and became a devoted follower of Lord Naarayana. Hearing this, Hiaranyakashyap asked his sister, Holika to enter a blazing fire taking Prahlad in her lap. Holika had been vested with the boon of not getting damaged by fire. With not being aware of the fact that only she could enter the fire alone, she had to pay for her ominous desires. Prahlad was saved from the fire due to his utmost devotion towards God. This is why this festival is marked as a celebration of the victory of good over evil.
There is another history of Holi festival which is associated with Lord Krishna. He started the tradition of Holi by applyng colors on his beloved Radha and the other gopis. It slowly gained repute and became a well known tradition over the years.
The other legends of Holi are the legend of Shiva and Kaamadeva and that of Ogress Dhundhi and Pootana. All these mark the victory of good over evil
